Hi, I’m Mariah.

Welcome! I am the owner, founder, and lead therapist/financial therapist at Koru Financial Therapy.

I understand that wellbeing is not just about physical, mental, emotional, financial, and social health factors; it's about aligning your life and actions with how you truly want to live and behave.

That is why I started Koru Financial Therapy to provide those who experience shame, guilt, or anxiety a holistic approach to navigating emotional and financial health while embracing a life of wealth and wellbeing. Here’s how my unique blend of expertise and experience can guide you on your journey to growth, strength, and peace.

  • I am a licensed mental health clinician (LCSW) based in California who provides evidence-based psychotherapy to individuals, couples, families, and entrepreneurs.

  • I have over 20 years of experience in medical social work, 10 years as a licensed clinical social worker, and a specialty in financial therapy for the last 6 years.

  • I tailor treatment to address each client’s mental health, including anxiety, depression, adjustment, or money disorders, as well as clients’ financial needs and goals as indicated.

My Approach

In my practice, I utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to treat mental health concerns or diagnoses. For financial concerns, I uniquely blend Financial Therapy and ACT or use Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), to help you navigate difficult thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and heal trauma, while at the same time supporting you to take action toward your life or your financial goals.

I am Gottman Level I and ACT for Couples trained to support couples and family counseling and am trained in Trauma Focused ACT, Perfectionism and People Pleasing, and ADHD.

My qualifications

My educational background includes a BA in Sociology from UC San Diego and an MSW from UC Berkeley.

While living and working in New Zealand, I received an Executive MBA from the University of Waikato.

I am a licensed clinical social worker in California, LCSW #65613.

Additionally, I am a Certified Financial Therapist (CFT) through the Financial Therapy Association.

Finally, I am bi-lingual and can provide psychotherapy in both English and Spanish.

My journey

to becoming a financial therapist was inspired by my experiences of overcoming financial adversity. As a child I was raised by a single mom ❤️who was the sole financial caregiver for my sibling and me. My childhood was steeped in financial scarcity and anxiety, carrying this stress with me through early adulthood.

In graduate school, I awoke to this financial stress as well as other limiting beliefs I gleaned in childhood through my faith. Having taken on school loans to start my professional career as a social worker, I was vulnerable to undervaluing my skills, underearning, and burnout in addition to my financial debt. Thus, I avoided money/earnings, racked up debt, acted impulsively, misused credit cards, resented people with money, and felt like such a complete and utter failure in regards to money.

Through awareness, grace, healing, literacy, and purpose, I learned to work through those feelings and build a life that reflects how I want to live. If you were to speak to my community, they would (hopefully:) say that my core values are adventure, connection, and service. I now enjoy financial balance in my life - spending in line with my values while at the same time saving, investing, and giving. It is a journey.

My greatest strengths

is being a trauma-informed, neuro-affirmative, safe, and neutral space as well as a soundboard to explore your innermost fears and anxieties related to life and your finances.

Providing psychotherapy services, for me, is a passion and privilege. I constantly look for ways to improve my practice to better serve my clients and community.

I have deeply enjoyed this path to date and look forward to our work together.

Outside of therapy, I enjoy spending time with my family, being in nature, and having adventures. These personal interests inform my holistic approach to therapy, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit.

Building rapport

is essential to an effective therapeutic relationship. Below are some of my tested traits that may be of interest or complementary to yours.

Enneagram: 7 & 9, 1 - Enthusiast & Peacemaker, and Reformer. I combine excitement and energy with a deep sense of peace and a drive for improvement. This blend ensures that our sessions are filled with enthusiasm and creativity while also fostering a calm and structured environment for you to explore your financial goals.

Human Design Type: Manifesting Generator, 6/3 which means I bring a dynamic, multifaceted approach to financial counseling. I thrive on variety and have a natural ability to pivot and adapt, which helps me create tailored strategies that fit your unique needs,

Financial Archetype: The Saver & The Pleasure Seeker. I understand the balance between enjoying life and being financially prudent. I will help you find joy in your financial journey while ensuring that you are saving and planning for the future.

Core Money Beliefs: Money Avoider (Recovering) & Money Vigilant. As a recovering Money Avoider and someone who is Money Vigilant, I recognize the importance of facing financial realities head-on while maintaining a vigilant approach to managing money. I will support you in overcoming avoidance tendencies and help you build a vigilant, proactive relationship with your finances.
